With an increased focus on the need to ensure sustainable development via 17 goals and 169 targets, the new UN Sustainable Development Goals mention the importance of cultural heritage under Goal 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities
Goal 11: Make cities inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable
Target 11.4: Strengthen efforts to protect and safeguard the world’s cultural and natural heritage
However, cultural heritage can also contribute to the following agendas:
Goal 4: Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.
Target 4.7: By 2030, ensure that all learners acquire the knowledge and skills needed to promote sustainable development, including,among others, through education for sustainable development and sustainable lifestyles, human rights, gender equality, promotion of a culture of peace and nonviolence, global citizenship and appreciation of cultural diversity and of culture’s contribution to sustainable development
Goal 8:Promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all.
Target 8.9: By 2030,devise and implement policies to promote sustainable tourismthat creates jobs and promotes local culture and products.
Goal 12:Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns.
Target 12.10: Develop and implement tools to monitor sustainable development impacts for sustainable tourism that creates jobs and promotes local culture and products
